Editing

Big picture, or nitty gritty?

I’m a qualified English teacher in NSW Secondary Schools and have completed a Professional Editing course as a part of my Masters of Arts in Creative Writing at UTS. I’m a freelance content and copywriter, and have experience in publicity and marketing at Random House.

If you’d like a piece of fiction or non fiction work edited, whether it’s personal or professional, please get in touch for rates. I specialise in editing fiction (particularly young adult and speculative) and Australian-Standard English feature articles, but I’ve also got experience in editing for HR, education, and fitness.

The fee for each edit depends on the length and nature of the work. Not sure what kind of edit your work needs? Here are some examples:

Structural

A structural edit is a ‘big-picture’ edit; an overview of the flow and shape of your writing, with a detailed report mapping its strengths and weaknesses in regards to themes, plot, narrative, character, pacing, tone, etc. It considers who the writing is for, and how to best make it work for that audience.

Copyedit

A copyedit is more line-by-line, using track changes in Word to address technical details e.g. style, spelling, punctuation, grammar, and language, as well as content. It improves the clarity, coherency, consistency and correctness of your writing.

Proofread

A proofread is the fine-toothed comb edit; it checks for grammar, punctuation and spelling errors or inconsistencies. This is the quickest edit, and does not suggest any stylistic changes to your writing.
